On Saturday, June 7, 2025, the Foundation was officially presented at the event
"Planting the Flag Cultural Gathering" A Puerto Rican cultural gathering at Grand St. Settlement. We were invited to the conversation "Mujeres con Sazón from Jayuya to NY, Boricua Cuisine is Culture" with the community, and we brought the seasoning to New York with traditional polvorones and coffee straight from Jayuya. We shared our written recipes with a group of people from the senior community and exchanged culinary experiences with women cooks in the diaspora.
The event was sponsored by The Clemente Center, a space dedicated to disseminating, connecting, and affirming the work of Puerto Ricans in the Big Apple. The center is named after Clemente Soto Velez, a Puerto Rican activist and poet who moved to New York in the mid-20th century and mentored many contemporary artists, poets, writers, and community leaders.
In addition to Mujeres con Sazón, Marcelo Matos, son of Hector Tito Matos, representing the La Goyco Cultural Center in Santurce, along with singer and composer Hermes Croatto, Libertad Guerra, Director of The Clemente, and Attorney Victor Rivera, a pupil of Clemente Soto Vélez, were also invited to the discussion.
The gathering served to share our mission with the community and build collaborative ties with other cultural organizations and promoters in New York. We want the legacy of Puerto Rican cuisine to transcend borders and generations. Cooking is much more than food. Cooking unites, heals, and connects, and we want to tell the stories woven into Puerto Rican kitchens.
